Our Response to the Coronavirus

With the unprecedented crisis, we plan to support Portland Public Schools in order to minimize academic learning loss. Notably, we are filling the gap for parents who suddenly have their children home, but who may still be working themselves. Our staff is working with the parents to provide resources, to provide emotional and academic support, and to customize tutoring for those who need it.

Our staff is also helping middle school students build a study routine, which may include setting them up on Google Hangouts, using the free online learning resource Khan Academy, and completing assignments. Our summer program will keep us connected with our kids throughout the summer to prepare for next year.

All or our efforts incorporate the 7 Pillars that are the guiding principles of our program: respect, goal setting, positivity, integrity, hard-work, leadership and personal responsibility. Through this crisis, and always, our mentors are encouraging students to model these values so they continue to find consistency, self-discipline and resilience in the midst of change.

About the Maurice Lucas Foundation

The Foundation is named in honor of the late Maurice Lucas (1952-2010), the leading scorer on the 1977 NBA champion Trail Blazers team. Besides his outstanding achievements on the court, Lucas also selflessly gave his time and energy to Portland youth. Since its formation in 2010, the Maurice Lucas Foundation has served thousands of students and families through its Academy program, basketball camps and teams.
