First day of Academy Program — Off to a great start!
Our middle school Academy Program kicked off on September 18 with close to 60 students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade from Harriet Tubman Middle School.
Students will spend time in both the classroom and the gym. They will rotate through Academic Support stations that focus on core subjects such as math, reading, writing, and science. Tutors will provide students with short mini-lessons that reinforce the classroom curriculum, and students will have opportunities to practice the skill before completing homework.
We will also be emphasizing the 7 pillars of success and working on goal setting and looking to the future with career interests and job shadows. We will have guest speakers throughout the year along with a few field trips. We are excited to have more engagement with the parents and more parent involvement.
Over the past 9 years, we’ve had more than 550 students go through the Academy.
About the Maurice Lucas Foundation
The Foundation is named in honor of the late Maurice Lucas (1952-2010), the leading scorer on the 1977 NBA champion Trail Blazers team. Besides his outstanding achievements on the court, Lucas also selflessly gave his time and energy to Portland youth. Since its formation in 2010, the Maurice Lucas Foundation has served thousands of students and families through its Academy program, basketball camps and teams.
